The immediate future is pulling into view, with the announcement of Ncuti Gatwa’s casting as the next Doctor, celebrated on ���˿��� Scotland’s news programme The Nine.

The final words should be given to two of the most pivotal people in Doctor Who’s history. First, original producer Verity Lambert, who in this 2003 clip tries to distil the appeal and longevity of the series. She discusses the imagination and rich variety of the show, but also its attraction for different generations.

The last word goes to showrunner Russell T Davies. In 2008, he was asked how long Doctor Who could go on for. His reply – “Forever!”
