Episode 42
The girls head of to Kyleakin located in the south of Skye. The name Kyleakin means ‘The Straits of Haakon'. It was named after King Haakon IV of Norway moored there on his way to the Battle of Largs. The girls take a trip to Kyleakin and go an visit Caisteal Maol. This was, according to legend, home to a Viking princess called ‘Saucy Mary'. She apparently used to throw a heavy chain across to the mainland and levy a toll to passing ships. Some legends also proclaim that she is buried on top of a mountain called Beinn na Caillich. She is buried facing Norway and her grave is marked by an ancient cairn.
Marsaili is inspired by this tale and wishes to climb the mountain and add a stone to the cairn. Sìleas, after falling off the Quiraing, is not convinced and certainly does not want another trip to the hospital. However, she is also inspired by the tale of Saucy Mary and thinks it would be most enterprising to throw a chain over to the mainland at Kyle and levy a toll in a bid to raise money.
