Cigarette cards

Contributed by Lecale and Downe Historical Society

These Players' cigarette cards date back to the 1930s. Each card features a caricature of a 'celebrity' of the day. Among the names you can see G K Chesterton, Kipling, Lloyd George and Chaplin. They give you a real flavour of the celebrities of the day and celebrity culture of the time and how different things are today. All these people became known around the world for their various talents. Also included is Sir Thomas Lipton, who had strong ties with Northern Ireland and, in particular, the Royal Ulster Yacht Club in Bangor, where there is a Lipton Room in his honour.
