This is an Emdicta machine and comes from the contributor's father's collection. Alexander Graham Bell developed an early model of the Dictaphone in 1891, and created the Volta Graphophone Company, which went on to become Columbia Records. The name 'Dictaphone' was trademarked by the Columbia Graphophone Company in 1907. The basis of the product was wax cylinder recording until after World War Two - after which Dictaphone pioneered the use of cutting into a plastic belt rather than a wax cylinder. By the late 1970s, cassettes were the norm.
