Defend Political Status Smash H Blocks

This is an appeal written by Irish Republicans imprisoned in Long Kesh to British Trades Unionists. It is written on prison toilet paper and then was smuggled out of Long Kesh. The letter details the terrible conditions that the prisoners were enduring and appeals to Trades Unionists to support them in their struggle to regain political status - the right not to be treated as common criminals. The prisoners embarked on a 'dirt protest' - they refused to slop out and wore only blankets. This protest was followed by hunger strikes. In the last hunger strike led by Bobby Sands ten prisoners lost their lives.
