The earliest written history of the beginning, growth and development of Presbyterianism in Ireland in the 17th century was written by the Rev Patrick Adair. It is entitled 'A True Narrative of the Rise and Progress of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland', 1623-70, and is an eye-witness account of the struggles faced by Presbyterian settlers in Ireland in their relationships with the Established Church in Ireland and government authorities. It was first published in 1866 by the Rev WD Killen and was recently re-published by the Presbyterian Historical Society. The Rev Patrick Adair served as a minister in Cairncastle from 1646-74 and then in Belfast from 1674-94.
