The hat case is called a bucket. It is made from brown leather with a carry handle on the lid. The bucket is fastened by a single leather strp which goes from the back, over the lid and under the handle, and ends at the brass lock on the front. The inside is red silk and there are compartments for the storage of the two top hats and a Gibus, which is a top hat that is collapsible. The bucket dates to the 1840s, the period when the Gibus became fashionable. The bottom of the bucket is stamped with the name and address of the original owner in Wolverhampton. The house is still there but it is now an office!
