This is made of papier mache. Handed down in the family from Miss Hammett in the 1950s, whose uncle was James Hammett, one of the Tolpuddle Martyrs. This tray is typical of imports from Japan in the early part of 20th century, when these were mass produced especially for the English market, where objects depicting scenes from the Orient were fashionable.
