This re used stone was discovered by builders facing in to a cellar wall in my first and most wonderful house. We don't know where it came from originally or whether it is religious or pagan. It looks to me like a bearded Jesus and I treat him like a green man, taking him with me when I move. It looks nothing like the carved stones at Fountains Abbey but there is documentary evidence of the existence of a chantry chapel and an early stone cross in the nearby St. John's well part of High Harrogate. It speaks to me of connections between past and present, hopes and beliefs, and the human need for representative objects. It could have come from anywhere in the world and it seems early, the fact that what I take to be eyes, aren't at the same level, makes it a rather expressive face. What I describe as shoulders might be part of a broad round topped entrance arch to a church or chapel? It would be great to hear from an expert on what and where might be the source of this thought provoking image.
