The first objects to be made of copper and bronze were axes, made in open stone moulds. Flat axes in Kilmartin have not survived, as axes are rarely found in graves, but their importance is suggested by carvings in three cairns. The rarity and newness of the material, added to the existing special status of axes, would have made them extremely prestigious objects.
The Copper Flat Axe was found at Loch Fada Colonsay, The Bronze Flat Axe was found at Du Bhar Glengorm in Mull.
