My mother gave me this buttonhook which came from my grandmother, Florence Lydia Fletcher, who was born in 1899 in London. It has a brass handle with a finial at the top and inlaid metal stripes. Buttonhooks were used to pull the many buttons on boots or shoes through the eyelets. I think it must have been difficult and uncomfortable, how fortunate we are to have zips!
