From 1902 until 1960 there ran a branch line linking Dornoch with the main railway line at The Mound. This light railway went through several settlements along the route including the village of Embo. In 1902 Embo was a thriving fishing village and the railway proved to be a boon to the fishwives who could follow the migrating herring around the East coast, gutting and packing the fish. This ticket rack from Embo station would have held return tickets to places as far away as Wick and Lowestoft. The Fishwives started the season in May travelling by train to Aberdeen, then taking the boat up to Lerwick in the Shetlands and finishing up in November at Great Yarmouth in Norfolk.
