This small carved face was found in an excavation at Lihou Priory, a Benedictine priory established on the tiny island of Lihou, off the west coast of Guernsey. The priory was probably built in the mid-twelfth century AD and the face may have formed part of the interior decoration of the building. It is carved in Caen limestone, imported from Normandy.
