Piece of the Berlin Wall

Piece of the Berlin Wall

This small fragment of concrete comes from the Berlin Wall (1961 - 1989). I visited Berlin shortly after the wall came down in 1989. It was a 6th form school trip and just as people in East Germany were getting their freedom, my classmates and I were also getting a taste of independence, travelling around the city on the U-Bahn and living with German families in their apartments. It was a liberating experience and amazing to be in Berlin at such an exciting and historical time. I now live in Northern Ireland but this small piece of wall reminds me that there is a big, wide world out there.
