This elephant was brought back from the Caribbean by an aunt who travelled out to Curacao in the 1920s. She went out when she was a teenager and stayed with a relative who was working in a BP refinery on the island. The Caribbean is still part of the Commonwealth, with close trading and administrative ties to Britain. These links were established in the early years of the plantations in the 18th century when slaves, primarily from Western Africa, were captured and put to work on the islands.
