This letter was written by Oswald McNiece to his cousin Vickie. McNiece was an explorer who ran away from home at the age of 14 years and who, among other adventures, lived for three years at the South Pole (and may have been on one of Shackleton's expeditions). He also served for a time as a pilot in the Australian Airforce from where he wrote to his cousin who was the contributor's grandmother. The letter has been carefully preserved and passed down through the family.

This letter is of great interest to me as I have been researching the life of Oswald McNeice as I have a letter written by him in February 1913 when he was a crewman on board the S Y Aurora, the ship used by Sir Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition. I have a great deal of information on him and have been trying to trace his Belfast roots and any possible relations he may have now (2012). I would be keen to share my project with the contributer of this item as his/her family appears to value its connection with Oswald.
