The Newport Medieval Ship is the largest and best preserved clinker built medieval merchant vessel ever recovered in the United Kingdom. It was found during the construction of the Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre in Newport, Wales in 2002. Archaeologists have been cleaning and recording the hull of the ship in order to prepare it for conservation. After the timbers are treated with a chemical called Poly Ethylene Glycol, they will be freeze dried. Archaeologists will then use the original timbers to reassemble the ship in a museum, exactly as it would have appeared back in the 15th century. Archaeologists are currently creating a 1:10 scale model of the Newport Ship using a rapid prototyping process called laser sintering. Each ship timber has been digitally drawn and is now being turned into a digital solid, which is then sent to the Manufacturing Engineering Centre at Cardiff University, where it is turned into a physical solid through a process called laser sintering. The model is currently being assembled at the ship centre in Maesglas, Newport. Come to one of the free monthly open days to see the actual ship and model, and talk to the archaeologists and conservators!
