A stone corbel in the form of a carved crowned head, suggested to be a likeness of Llywelyn ab Iorwerth (Llywelyn Fawr / Llywelyn the Great).
This stone head shows that far from being a poor kingdom within Britain Llywelyn kingdom had access to the skill and knowledge to create art work of quaility.
Although i come from the area it was the discovery of this artifact that led to a love of the Welsh history (the age of the princes. It is now a period that is being recognised and being taught in schools, but i was a subject that was largely ignored when i was at school.
The rediscovery of this period for me openned a world of medieval politics in Britain which didn't follow the nationlistic lines we see things today but a mixture of rich and powerful lords battling for control regardless of where they came from.
The carved stone head shows that not only was Llywelyn's unified Wales kingdom was not only a major player but also a known and active player in the western European world
