There pipes originate from Germany. One of the pipes were made in 1898, the other in 1906. The contributor's wife is German and they adopted a German Prisoner of War as a grandfather, called Walter. He went back to old East Germany for a funeral, and came back with these pipes. They had originally been given to a cavalry soldier.
The family later helped Walter's granddaughter escape East Germany. One day, the contributor went round to Walter's house and noticed the pipes weren't in their usual place - Walter had wrapped them up as a gift for him.
