This is the gravestone of a young cavalry soldier named Candidus, who died whilst being stationed at Y Gaer around 2,000 years ago. The stone tells us that he was part of a cavalry unit that was originally from Spain and that he died at the age of 20 after 3 years service in the Roman Army.
The gravestone was discovered near to the Roman Fortress at Y Gaer which is located just outside Brecon.
