Symbolic of the notions of honour and chivalry which were key to the Royalists and their doomed society. This toothpick is a personal item, which was owned by King Charles I and kept on his person during his imprisonment by Oliver Cromwell's men during the English Civil Wars. Charles' inability to sense the changing tides of politics led to his death by beheading following lengthy imprisonments in various houses and jails across England. During his final imprisonment he was moved by the respect with which he was treated by his Parliamentarian Guard and on being sent to the scaffold and certain death he presented him with his most personal possession that he had available, his gold toothpick.
