We have an American friend, Maj Nick Knilans, who flew with 617 squadron at Woodhall Spa. He gave us this picture of a Lancaster bombing the German battleship Tirpitz. When he came over for a reunion, Coulson the artist gave permission for the airmen to have a copy each and they all signed it. It has about 30 signatures on it. Nick sent it to us because he thought it should be back in Lincolnshire. The original painting is at RAF Cranwell. Nick told us a funny story - when they flew over to bomb the Tirpitz they couldn't fly the whole distance and had to stop in fields. When he took off one morning he couldn't get high enough out of the forest and a pine branch came into his cockpit. He kept it and it can now be seen at the Petwood Hotel in Woodhall Spa!
