This penny whistle belonged to my great grandfather - William John McCoy. He was born the parish of Seagoe, near Lurgan, Northern Ireland, He left to join the 6th Brigade Royal Artillery in 1847 and went on to fight in the Crimean War. He was badly wounded and was admitted as an out-pensioner of Her Majesty's Royal Hospital in Chelsea on 25 August 1868. The penny whistle is a wonderful thing to hold. It is something that my great-grandfather played and held. It is very tactile and it is incredible to think that this would have travelled with him overseas to the war in Crimea. Contributed by Vicky Herbert at the AHOW event at Enniskillen Library.
