This was probably dates from the turn of the century. It's an unusual subject for a brooch - it shows a pick axe, lovingly detailed in gold and precious stones. Maybe it was a specially commissioned object made to commemorate some industrial or technical achievement. It was inherited from the grandfather of the contributor's half sister.
