This crown commemorated the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981. This shows the national pride and sense of occasion that this wedding generated in the UK and around the world. 600,000 people filled the streets of London to see the couple on their wedding day. The couple were married at St Paul's Cathedra. There was an invited congregation of 3,500 and an estimated 750 million people watched the events - making it the most popular programme ever broadcast. People in the UK enjoyed a national holiday to mark the occasion.
