This stained glass panel was made by my late husband, Eddy Wilderspin-Jones (1955-1994). He used a traditional image with a twist, to comment on the idea of 'money being the root of all evil'. Using coins from various countries in place of apples in the tree and a debit card being passed between Adam and Eve. This card was his own, as he felt it essential to recognise his own part in our culture's grab for money. It was also not meant to be clear if Eve was passing the card to Adam, or Adam to Eve.
It was a way he found to express his frustration at the injustice he saw around him in the way our financial world works, rich people getting richer and poor becoming poorer; the acquesition of wealth being more important than wellbeing.
The piece uses traditional techniques and imagery to make a modern comment, however he recognised this comment too was not a new observation. When he showed it to people he was struck by how it seemed to divide viewers into two groups, those who understood just by reading the picture and those that needed an explanation of what it meant.
