In the Medieval period, people would go on journeys called 'pilgrimages' to religious sites. As mementos, pilgrims would buy souvenirs which they would wear on their hats and cloaks.
The souvenir features the Madonna and child. The Madonna is holding the child on her right side and is dressed in a long robe with a flat headdress with a long veil. Although probably British, it is possible that the souvenir may have Italian origins, as the Abbey de Gloria of Anagni, near Rome held Magor from 1238 until it was leased to Tintern abbey in the 14th century.
