This Georgian sugar basket bears a hallmark from 1790 and includes a family crest. It was taken by a missionary to Nyasaland (present day Malawi) in 1912, and it was used for formal meals in the African heartland. It was brought back to UK in 1940 by the group of missionaries, which included by mother in law. It shows how British standards and routines were maintained in these far off lands, and how such precious objects were considered everyday objects.
