In my last piece with Davina McCall, I used a brand new track by Cheryl Cole called High Heels and Headaches. So I'll have a look to see if it's in the Proteus database first. OK, Proteus can't find it. That's probably because it's a brand new track. If you think a track you're looking for ought to be in the system but Proteus doesn't record any results, it is worth searching again. We don't want duplications in the music database. So it's always worth checking your spelling is correct or you've got the song title right.

If you're sure it's not there, though, you can go to the tab at the bottom here that says create track. This lets you input information to create a new record in the Proteus music database. The first level of information Proteus is asking for here is performance. And this is who sang it and where. It will ask for an MRU code. You should be familiar with these from manual music reporting.

In this case, it's C, a commercial disc. The performer's title shouldn't be any different from the work title, so you can leave this blank. But you will need an exact duration for the track. And this is the duration for the whole track because you're creating a new data entry in the new music library here. You need this information because you're creating a new data entry in the music library here, not just giving information on a single use. Finally, you need to put details of the artist who performed this track and in this case, it's Cheryl Cole. Proteus will have a look for her and it's found her here.

Next Proteus wants information about the work and that's the song title. Proteus is looking through the database as you type, but if it can't find the title you've typed, it will ask you to create a new work. If you click on that tab, it will automatically put the title of the work into the box and you'll need to add details of a composer before you click OK and move on.

Finally, Proteus wants details of the album you've taken this work from. You need to put details of the album title and if Proteus can't find it in its catalogue, it will ask you to create a new album. When you fill in the create a recording group box, you just need to put details - the label and the catalogue number. Then you just need to put details of the side and the track number into Proteus. In most cases with CDs, it will be side one, and if it's a double CD, it may be side two. The track number is self explanatory. Once you've saved this track, you'll see it appear on the right hand side. Then you can just drag it into your running order, changing the duration that you actually used within your programme as appropriate.
